The recruitment process, especially in the dental industry, is becoming more complicated with a number of new stages being introduced in order for the dental office to hire for the right fit at the first time of asking. In the past, when a candidate has been through the interview process, and maybe even had a second interview, it was common for the recruiter to forgo the background check and simply proceed with hiring the candidate. Because dental jobs are often inundated with applicants, potential candidates are trying hard to stand out compared to their competitors. But, with this increase in competition, some candidates are trying to artificially inflate their achievements or sometimes miss out some areas of their employment history that they’d rather forget about. While many experienced HR professionals are able to see through some of the lies that potential candidates provide, they can’t identify every lie unless they conduct a full background check.3

When carrying out a background check, you should focus on:

  • Checking with previous employers about the claims that the candidate makes about how long they worked for the organization and what position they held.
  • Checking their educational achievements. This could mean calling up the candidate’s educational establishment to verify their degree award for example.
  • While it may seem extreme, a drug test is useful, especially when the safety of patients could be at risk. You can never be too careful in this day and age.
  • Criminal record checks are also important. We would recommend full enhanced disclosures which will show any police warnings for example. You could land yourself and the dental office into real trouble if the candidate had a conviction for crimes against children and they went on to treat children.

We would recommend that you avoid background checks which are carried out by external companies. Many small websites have offered their services online claiming to offer the same level of vetting as an HR professional would, but often these websites simply do a basic check and won’t do a full check that you would be happy with. Therefore, invest time and effort doing your own check.

It is recommended you carry out a background check when you have maybe narrowed your list down to five potential employees.
