Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) are counted amongst the most reputed and top engineering institutes not only in India but also across the globe. Their ranking is calculated based on the various parameters such as the difficulty level of the entrance exam, selection ratio, cutoffs, and placements.

Joint Entrance Examination

JEE is the only selection channel and engineering entrance examination that leads you to get admission to a seat at various IITs in India. JEE comprises of two separate examination stages, JEE Main and JEE Advanced exam.

The difficulty level of the entrance exam for the admissions to IITs, called as Joint Entrance Examination (JEE), can be understood with the fact that total 1,186,454 applicants took part in JEE Main in 2017 and finally only 9,784 of them got the admissions to the various IITs.

This makes the selection ratio only around 0.008 and considered as one amongst world’s toughest entrance examinations. Only those candidates who score equal to or more than the cutoff marks specified for these exams are allowed to attend the counseling process for admission to the IITs.

JEE Main is the first stage examination, which is just the qualifying parameter to appear in JEE Advanced. You need to note that your JEE Main score hold no value in the counseling procedure of the IITs.

So, the final exam that makes you decide to choose a seat at a top-ranked IIT is JEE Advanced. The better you score in JEE Advanced exam; more chances are that you get a seat at a better-ranked IIT.

QS Ranking for Top IITs

Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) issues an annual ranking of all the famous institutions across the world. It is the matter of pride for all of us that 3 IITs are listed in Asia’s top 50 institutions and the university as per this year’s QS ranking.

Additionally, the top 7 IITs in India found their place in the top 100 Asia’s institutes of the QS rank list. These IITs in the increasing order of their overall domestic or National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) along with their international ratings are described below.

1- IIT Madras

IIT Madras has nearly 550 faculty members, 8,000 students and 1,250 administrative and supporting staff. The various departments of IIT Madras include Aerospace Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Design, Humanities and Social Sciences, Mechanical Engineering, Management Studies, Metallurgical and Materials Engineering, Mathematics, Ocean Engineering, and Physics.

The self-contained campus includes two schools, temples, bank branches, hospital, shopping centers, food shops, gym, swimming pool, cricket, football, hockey and badminton stadiums. The internet is also available in the academic zone and the faculty and staff residential zone.

IIT Madras is known to have the fastest super-computing facility among all educational institutions in India. Additionally, IIT Madras has a supercomputer with 20 teraflops.

75.38% students from IIT Madras were placed in top-ranked organizations across the world. Almost all the remaining students opted for higher studies. The least package offered to the placed students was INR 4.2 lakhs per annum and the highest package was INR 1.13 crores per annum.

2- IIT Bombay

IIT Bombay has a greater brand value in India since the beginning. It is also more accessible to the students and even the top rankers prefer IIT Bombay over IIT Kharagpur.

It is the second oldest IIT in India. Apart from the B.Tech. courses, IIT Bombay also offers a comprehensive graduate program offering doctoral degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.

IIT Bombay has currently 14 academic departments, six centers, one school and three interdisciplinary programs. In last 53 years, around 39,000 students have been awarded an engineering and doctoral degrees from IIT Bombay.

84.34% students of IIT Bombay were placed in various companies. The others opted to go for higher studies or joined their business. The salary package offered to the placed students was from INR 5 lakhs to 70 lakhs per annum.

3- IIT Kharagpur

It is the first IIT of India established in 1951. There are various streams in IIT Kharagpur such as Aerospace Engineering, Agricultural & Food Engineering, Architecture & Regional Planning, Biotechnology, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry, Civil Engineering, Computer Science & Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Electronics & Electrical Communication Engineering, Geology & Geophysics, Humanities & Social Sciences, Industrial & Systems Engineering, Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgical & Materials Engineering, Mining Engineering, Ocean Engineering & Naval Architecture and Physics.

The placement at IIT Kharagpur has been fabulous over the past few years. Many students have got multiple offers of jobs from various organizations.

Out of the total 594 undergraduate students, 492 were successfully placed in various companies. The salary package ranged from INR 4-20 lakhs per annum in 2017.

4- IIT Delhi

IIT Delhi was established in 1961. It offers Bachelor of Technology programs in various fields as well as dual degree B.Tech and M.Tech courses.

IIT Delhi also offers postgraduate programs awarding M.Tech (by coursework), M.S. (by research), M.Sc., M. Des., MBA under various departments. The package of IIT Delhi is fabulous.

The salary packages offered to its students are always high. IIT Delhi blasted a boom in 2017 when its student got a job with salary package INR 1.4 crores per year from Microsoft.

5- IIT Kanpur

IIT Kanpur was established in 1959. It was formulated with the assistance of a consortium of nine US research universities as part of the Kanpur Indo-American Program (KIAP).

For the first ten years of its existence, the following KIAP universities assisted it – M.I.T, University of California, Berkeley, California Institute of Technology, Princeton University, Carnegie Institute of Technology, University of Michigan, Ohio State University, Case Institute of Technology and Purdue University.

A student at IIT Kanpur was also offered by Microsoft with INR 1.5 crores per annum. Top recruiters of 2017 include Adobe, Credit Suisse, EXL, GE, Goldman Sachs, Intel, Microsoft, Nutanix, Oracle, and Samsung.

6- IIT Roorkee

IIT Roorkee was the seventh established IIT of India by James Thomason as Thomason College of Civil Engineering in 1847. In 1949, it became a university and was remained the University of Roorkee till 2001.

It was converted into IIT in 2001 by an act of Government of India and an ordinance is now converted into the act by parliament to make IIT, Roorkee an Institution of National Importance. It has 21 academic departments covering engineering, applied sciences, humanities & social sciences academic centers, 3 centers of excellence and some supporting units.

The Institute offers various UG, PG, Integrated and Ph.D. Courses in Engineering, Management, Science, and Architecture. IIT Roorkee Admission for all courses is based on National Entrance exams such as JEE Advanced, GATE, IIT JAM or NATA.

The average package of IIT Roorkee students was 7.2 lakhs per annum. Three students of this institute were offered INR 1.39 crores per annum by Microsoft.

7- IIT Guwahati

IIT Guwahati has a higher ranking as it has also won world rank 87 for universities under the age of 50 years. It was established in 1994 and has been recognized as the Institute of National Importance by the Government of India.

IIT Guwahati has currently 11 departments and 5 academic centers. The institute offers disciplines – Engineering, Science, and Humanities offering BTech, BDes, MA, MDes, MTech, MSc and Ph.D. programs to the aspirants.

IIT Guwahati placements are offered to the deserving students in the well-reputed companies such as Adobe, Amazon, Infosys, Microsoft, and Google. The average package offered to the placed students was INR 11 lakhs per annum and the highest was INR 34 lakhs per annum.
