1. Mistake: Inventing a new name for an educational institution. Correct: Use the full name or the shortened one which is officially acceptable and known (you can give a shortened name in parenthesis for referring further in the resume). DO include the location (city, or abbreviation of the state). DO NOT give street addresses and zip codes of the school or work location.
2. Mistake: Listing a personal web site which contains not relevant or inappropriate information: • photos in inappropriate clothes; • photos of you consuming alcohol or socializing with friends; • jokes, animations.
Correct: You can put a reference to a web site when it contains: • copies of your resume, reference letters, certifications or any other documentation corresponding to the job you look for; • professional or academic papers; • photos of you or made by you (creative photos may be included) if they are relevant to the job position you want to obtain (consider that some images may take to much time to download – no one will look at such photos).
3. Mistake: Putting a photo on a resume. Correct: THE ONLY case when photo on you resume can be appropriate is when you apply for an acting/theatrical position where appearance is important and relevant.
4. Mistake: Using small fonts. An employer usually reads a huge amount of resumes and takes less than a minute to look through one. Small fonts make the resume difficult to read and there is a potential risk employer won’t read it at all. Correct: Try not to use smaller than 10 point font (not all fonts are equally sized).
5. Mistake: Too wide margins that “squeeze” the content in the middle. Correct: Margins should be between a half and one inch in width.
6. Mistake: Prolonged wordy descriptions Correct: It is not necessary to write complete sentences in your resume. Short, clear phrases are enough.
7. Mistake: Misprints and other minor errors Correct: Be sure to spellcheck your resume; however, remember that there are misprints the spellcheck doesn’t correct. Ask your friend or relative to read thorough your resume. Remember that the employer has only your resume and a cover letter to form the first impression about you. If you make mistakes here, then you are likely to make even more mistakes in your job.
8. Mistake: Being abundantly creative, using too complicated formats Correct: The layout should be simple and neat, easy to read and comprehend. Do not combine different font types and use one size, only for your name use a bigger font size. Some try to show their creativity to stand out from the crowd. Don’t forget that resume is a wrong document to show your creative potential, since the employer are interested in the content, not the desing.
