The best way to make your cover letter efficient and convincing if you are a career changer, is to write in it your TRANSFERABLE SKILLS – skills you developed at your previous workplace or during any other activity (course, clubs, seminars, etc) that are applicable to the new job you want to get.
While from the chronological resume it is usually easy to determine what the person is able to do and whether he/she suits the position, in the functional resumes person’s previous responsibilities may not coincide with the new ones. That is why it is recommended to use “Objectives” part of the resume, which can also be referred to as “Transitive objectives”, where the applicant will help the employer understand what skills acquired previously are transferable to use in the new job.
E.g. Seeking a position of __________ that will efficiently maximize my experience in __________.
To use my ___-year experience in ________ (or as a ________ ) in the field of _________.
It is important to touch upon the topic of changing career right in the cover letter. There is no need to describe and explain why you don’t like present job. What is necessary is shortly state:
- what attracts you in the new field; - what skills you possess that are transferable.
Saying directly that although at first glance you may not correspond to a type of candidate wanted, you are confident that such and such skills of yours as well as your knowledge of this and that would be very useful in the new job and would perfectly match new position can be very affective and create a winning cover letter and resume.
