A Winning Electronic Cover Letter

Here is the list of all the points you need to mention in your e-mail cover letter. Don’t write too descriptively.

Purpose. Obviously you need to write what job/position you are applying for and where you saw an advertisement of the job. You may also include your current job/position if you want.

Giving names. It is always useful to drop a name early in the letter. If somebody informed you on the job being available or you know somebody who already works there, name the person.

Why you? Give something to the recipient that will hook him. Shortly say what are your qualifications, education, skills, traits of character, participation in some programs or personal and professional attainments that are relevant to the position.

Closing. When it comes to closing the letter make sure you sound positive and state clearly what you want next to happen. You may write “I am looking forward to speaking with you”, “If necessary I can send a printed copy of the letter and/or resume,” etc.

Salutations. You have to include salutations in the beginning of your cover letter (Dear Mr./Ms) naming the person you are writing to and in the end (Sincerely yours) giving your name after it. Be sure to proofread, spellcheck and insert blank lines between the paragraphs. There is no need to write a date. It is necessary, however, to write your contact information: your mail and e-mail address, as well as contact telephone number.

Last Checks

After your resume and cover letter are ready save them in ASCII format, then select it and paste in the e-mail body message (sometimes resumes are sent as attachments, but usually they should appear right after the cover letter in the body of the e-mail message).

Name the letter appropriately. You can type the job title in the Subject line.

One more precautionary step is to send e-mail to your friend to see if it is readable. If you are sure it will work, you may omit this step. You must, however, double or even triple check all the possible mistakes. If you allow a mistake appear on your cover letter or resume, it is more than likely to be deleted.

Now when everything is thoroughly checked and looked through, your e-mail is ready to be sent, click Send button and GOOD LUCK!
