Vocabulary That MattersThere is no doubt the language you use during the interview can help you win a job offer or fail you, since the interviewer views your education and general aptitude judging from the words you say.

Often an ability to communicate verbally plays a major role in choosing a person to fit a position. You may be not enough qualified but you must know how to depict yourself in the best light and “sell” yourself to the employer.

There are two groups of people who are most unlikely to get a job offer because of their vocabulary and communicational skills:

• those who use too a many highbrow, academic vocabulary words and give abundant descriptions instead of being precise and clear;
• those who when hear academic words, don’t understand them.

These are two extremes: being too smart and demonstrative or show lack of intelligence. The happy medium is when you are comfortable with the vocabulary you use and other people can clearly and easily understand what you say.

Tips to improve your vocabulary:

• Practice using “power words”. These are words that are in most people’s passive vocabulary, worlds that can be efficiently used in business or public speaking but that are more often read than said. Try to transfer such words to your active vocabulary and learn to be confident using them. People will take a notice at your ability to communicate freely using such words and expressions.

• Think over (you can even write down some notes) the vocabulary which can be useful during the interview: words that describe your experience and achievements, your character and potential, etc.

• Avoid using verbal crutches like ‘like’, ‘you know’, ‘um’ and others.

• Read more periodical and journals, communicate with the professionals of different spheres and just develop as a personality.
