Decoding the Dress Code

You are a representative of a modern world with advanced ideas and non-standard opinions. The times of old-fashioned three-piece suits and conservative skirts that your mother always wore to work are long in the past and you feel comfortable expressing your individuality in the way you dress. Although some companies have very undemanding rules concerning business attire, it is often necessary to correspond to the dress code to fit in the new firm and be appropriate.

What should you wear to work?

• Before answering this question, take notice how your colleagues are dressed. This is a useful tip to be taken as early as during the interview stage (or even earlier; for example, you can visit a company you are interested in when arranging your interview, this will help you to be appropriately dressed for the latter).

• Think about the fact whether or not your work place is opendress-code to visitors and whom do you meet during your working day. If you need to deal with customers all the time, you attire should be quite formal.

• Take a look at your boss. If he is the one who breaks the strict rules of a dress code, then you can allow yourself a little bit of freedom. Remember, however, that most employers expect you to be self-conscious about your garments (for instance, some of the top-job bosses prefer their women employees not to wear pants to work).

Although the rules differ from company to company, and they are always changing in the fast business world, it is recommended to think about you firm, your teammates, clients and management and the position when choosing your clothes for work.
