Business casual attire is less formal than interview attire, or business attire. You can wear business casual for some career fairs or job fairs if there are not specified other style. But some fairs require interview attire. If you have any doubts, it is better to ask the host or sponsor about attire for a function you will be attending.
Business casual is crisp, neat, and should be appropriate even for a chance meeting with a CEO. It shouldn’t be tight or baggy. Business casual is classic.
BASIC PRINCIPLES Both men and women can wear khaki pants, neatly pressed, and a pressed long-sleeved, buttoned solid shirt. If the environment will be quite casual, outdoors or in a very hot location you can put on polo or golf shirts, unwrinkled. You should choose leather belt and leather shoes and avoid athletic ones as well as in interview cases. Cost, quality and details requirements are like interview’s are. Don’t wear your worst gym clothes and jeans. If you realize that your attire isn’t as well as should be, make a quick, pleasant apology and make a good impression with your interpersonal skills and intelligent questions.
PECULIARITIES OF MEN'S BUSINESS CASUAL Tie. In general, business casual doesn’t require ties. Anyway you can wear a tie and discreetly walk by the room where the function is held; if no one else is wearing a tie, you can discreetly remove yours. Other requirements are just as with interviews.
PECULIARITIES OF WOMEN'S BUSINESS CASUAL Pants / Skirts Casual pants or skirts are appropriate for women. They should be creased and tailored but not too tight or flowing. Choose crisp fabrics and solid colors (navy, black, gray, brown and khaki).
Skirt Length and Slits Look through Interview Attire section to learn more about skirt length and slits. Slits in the center back of a skirt that are facilitated walking a stair climbing, are acceptable. Also watch you slips are invisible.
Shirt / Sweaters Women can wear tailored shirts or blouses, tailored knit sweaters. Use cotton, silk, or blends and avoid velvets and shimmer fabrics. Tight fit is inappropriate as well as cleavage.
Jewelry and Accessories Jewelry, accessories and cosmetics requirements stay the same as with interviews. First of all, be conservative and avoid extremes. If you are pursuing a creative industry, you may have more flexibility than someone in a conservative industry.
Shoes Shoes should be leather or fabric / microfiber, coordinated with your other attire and accessories in style and in color. If sandals aren’t extremely dressy or extremely casual, they might be appropriate. Platforms, thin straps, high or chunky heels are inappropriate. Your shoes should be comfortable.
Hosiery Business casual doesn’t require to wear hose, but it is recommended if your skirt is knee length (rather than calf length) and in more formal environments such as hotels.
