Changing jobs became usual thing today because of a lot of reasons: new jobs evolve, lifestyles change, industries alter or move to new structures. After all, the salary may not satisfy you or you've just tired of your everyday duties.

To make the process of changing career successful, take the following steps:

1. Consider your current job satisfaction. What exactly do you like or dislike in your current job? What are the reasons of your dissatisfactions: the content of your work, your company culture or your colleagues?

2. Self-assessment. Consider your interest, skills, past successful roles, projects and jobs. After that you can determine preferred direction of future career. Are your core values and skills addressed through your current career?

3. Think over all possible career alternatives. You may discuss your core values/skills with friends, family, networking contacts and counselors or search what you need in the network.

4. Investigate several fields to provide a preliminary comparative evaluation of opportunities. Then identify a few targets for in depth research.

5. Now you should find as much the information as possible about those fields and reach out to personal contacts in those arenas for informational interviews.

6. Try to find people who have jobs that interest you and shadow them to observe work first hand. Your college Career Office is a good place to find alumni volunteers who are willing to host job shadowers.

7. Test your interest choosing volunteer or freelance activities related to your target field.

8. Look for educational opportunities in the new field. You can take an evening course at a local college or spend some time at seminars. Professional groups in your target field may suggest you help, so contact them.

9. Investigate ways to develop new skills in your current job which would pave the way for a change. If your company offers in-house training, sign up for as many classes as you can.

10. Think over alternatives to your position within your current industry which would utilize the industry knowledge you already have.
