For many people starting personal business seems to end all the problems regarding career. However, self-employment is not always what you think of it. Be sure to know the real side of being your own boss before taking a decisive step.
Myth 1: When I am my own boss – I don’t have to answer to anybody. Reality: You have to answer to your customers, the financial institutions and partners you work with, the tax collectors and landlords.
Myth 2: The longest it takes to get started is a couple of months. Reality: In real life you must spend from 6 to 12 months of rigorous planning, research and testing of your products or services on the customers.
Myth 3: My product or service will surely be in demand. Reality: There is no “surely” when you start your own business. The popularity of your product and service depends on the effort, careful planning, time and energy you put into your business.
Myth 4: I will become rich. Reality: Even if you do get rich, it won’t happen very quickly. It usually takes more than a year for new businesses to start bringing back the money which was invested.
Myth 5: I will have more free time than with the current job. Reality: Most entrepreneurs agree that they spend much more time than they had spent at their previous positions. Of course, you decide yourself what pace to follow, but if you want to run a successful business, you will put as much time and effort as you can.
Myth 6: I can offer my services and products better and at lower prices than anybody else. Reality: When you spend time and resources on advertising and production, you may find that you have to offer your products at prices sometimes even higher than the ones in the business already. Lower prices are the privilege of the businesses that have been in the market for some time.
