horizonsOur life is fast-pacing, and the world changes very quickly. Keeping up to date is a necessary and important skill a successful worker should possess. Although you may prefer sitting at your work desk to throwing yourself into some unknown search of better career opportunities, there should always be a need to move forward and to conquer new heights.

The career ladder is not only what you see in front you, there is much more of it, and in order to see new horizons, you should open yourself as well as your eyes to changes.

• Explore how to apply the skills you have in other industries. There are a lot of professions that can be “multi-functional”, or perform duties at different businesses and companies. Pay careful attention to transferable skills – the ones you can apply in different life spheres. Although it may seem that you skills are very specific, it is often possible to find another place/industry/activity where they are applicable and beneficial. Be sure you evaluate what you can and look at your abilities from different perspectives.

• Never deny yourself when wanting to learn new skills or acquire new hobbies. No matter what your age is, it is always more than advisable to attend some courses or enroll in some clubs, become a member of some organizations or participate in programs and conferences.

• Establish a network of contacts with other people who work in your industry. It may appear useful to learn what the responsibilities of these people are. Seeing what other enjoy doing may give you an idea what you may improve in your working reality. Shifting your goals only a little may result in grand new career paths and opportunities.

• Learn and improve your knowledge constantly. Purposefully develop skills from which you may in future profit. Instead of light reading and listening to popular music, read and listen to the biographies of successful and prominent business people. Try to receive as much beneficial knowledge as possible.

• Be initiative. Offer to take on some new duties and perform some more advanced functions/responsibilities at your work. Try to do something you have never tried before. Learning new things about the industry you work in will help you develop a better understanding of how it works. And revealing initiative will surely be appreciated by the authorities and may accelerate the process of your promotion or career progress.
