A family lawyer represents people in a court with such problems as divorce, custody modifications, guardianship issues or issues relating to children with regards to divorce or custody. Family lawyers also work closely with child support agencies to assure that parents are paying child support as required by law and the court systems. A family lawyer may work along in a private practice or in a group of lawyers or partnership. Mediation is also a part of his job the lawyer may represent the client in the mediation process.
His duties also include wills and estates, handle power of attorney issues, advise clients on setting up wills, annuities and trust funds, working on adoptions and other issues. Most of an attorney's day spends working straightly with clients. In some countries an attorney can work with both parties in a family dispute in that case he provides they both agree while in others each party must be represented by a different family lawyer.

Family attorneys also have to prepare to the pleadings, be present at the court and represent their clients. Most attorneys are trying to resolve client’s problems or disputes through mediation, arbitration or other methods of resolution. Some lawyers are collaborative they work specifically to reach agreement between the two parties before going to court. Family attorneys have to finish the state bar examinations and all necessarily educational requirements before starting in the field.
